We strongly believe that the introduction of the UCP's proposed legislation changes are discriminatory, unlawful, and will lead to the abuse and ultimately deaths of Albertan children. We denounce the UCP's stance and instead stand in defense and support of Albertan Children. We believe that anyone in support of this legislation is knowingly or unknowingly complicit in putting the health and rights of Albertan children in jeopardy.

What is the proposed legislation?
(Source)
  • The Education Amendment Act would require children under 16 to have parental consent to go by  their preferred names or pronouns at school. Youth age 16 to 17 wouldn’t need consent, but parents would still be notified.

  • The Health Statutes Amendment Act would prohibit doctors from treating those under 16 seeking Gender Affirming Care.

  • The Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, would ban transgender women and girls from competing in female-only sports divisions and require organizations to report eligibility complaints.

Why We Cannot Allow This To Happen:
  • Transgender Youth are some of societies most vulnerable and at risk.

  • Studies of transgender adults show that Gender Affirming Care can reduce the occurrence of suicidal ideation from 73% to 43%. (source)

  • Denying vulnerable young people the right to privacy regarding their identity and health puts them at risk of abuse.

  • When the rights of any Albertan to determine their own identity and medical care with privacy are threatened, we should all be concerned.

  • All children deserve the equal rights to healthcare and privacy.

  • Denying transgender children access to age-appropriate affirming care and guidance from their doctor is proven to lead to an increased risk of substance abuse, self harm, and suicidal behaviors.

  • Social transition and puberty blocking medications are reversible, and allow individuals the crucial time needed to commit to lifelong changes.

  • Trans affirming care is already gatekept by an individual's PCP, Endocrinologist and Psychologist. There is no need for the government to restrict a child's access to this care as only individuals who pass each stage of assessment are provided with any form of irreversible care.

  • Mandating that sporting organizations launch investigations into the sex characteristics of minors as well as young adults is not only morally disgusting but will inevitably lead to witch hunts, bullying, and false reporting against transgender AND cisgender kids who do not fit the general binary stereotypes, such as what was seen during this year's Paris Olympics.

  • By actively encouraging and mandating adults to investigate the sex characteristics of children and young adults, the UCP is introducing opportunities for predators to be able to abuse this power.

  • There is no credible evidence to suggest transgender children have an unfair advantage against cisgender children.

  • By denying transgender kids equal access to compete in sports with their peers they are also being denied access to scholarship opportunities, as well as the physical and social benefits of being a part of a team.

Government Overreach:

In 1991 Canada ratified the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Here's how the UCP's proposed changes to Alberta law violate this convention:

  • Article 2 states that parties shall respect and ensure the rights set forth in the present Convention to each child within their jurisdiction without discrimination of any kind, irrespective of the child's [...] colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status.

  • Article 8 states that parties undertake to respect the right of the child to preserve his or her identity, including nationality and name.

  • Article 13 states the child shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers.

  • Article 19 states parties shall take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect the child from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse, while in the care of parent(s), legal guardian(s) or any other person who has the care of the child.
